What Is Moral Intelligence (MQ)?
Rather than simply drawing a line between “acceptable” and “unacceptable” actions, MQ challenges leaders to consider their own values and the knock-on effect of their decisions on others. In the 5Qs framework, MQ helps define a leader’s integrity.
An Example of MQ in Action
As a Member of Parliament, Hannah faces a moral dilemma when a high-profile donor offers substantial funding in exchange for support on a controversial policy. Hannah is aware of her responsibility to act as a moral role model (MQ), so reflects on the ethical implications and realises she needs to prioritise public transparency.
Rather than accepting the offer, Hannah holds a
press conference to remind her constituents of her commitment to impartiality
in public service. She reiterates how important it is to reach decisions based
on community needs rather than financial influence. Hannah has succeeded in
addressing the situation openly, improving public trust and reinforcing ethical
principles within her team and the broader political community.
