What Is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
Sometimes described as the hallmark of “smooth operators”, the emotional quotient gives leaders the aptitude to manage interpersonal dynamics with compassion and empathy. Such individuals build environments of trust and cooperation, which is a key component of strong teams who work cohesively.
In the 5Qs framework, EQ provides a foundation for
emotional intelligence in leadership, which is invaluable when managing both
team engagement and complex relationships.
An Example of EQ in Action
Team leader Shahid notices rising tension among his team members due to a tight project deadline. He is aware of the importance of maintaining morale and cohesion, so schedules an informal meeting to address the team’s concerns openly. Shahid listens actively, empathising with their stress. His team members leave the meeting feeling heard and validated.
Shahid then rethinks his previous approach. He
suggests flexible work arrangements and additional support to manage the
workload. By using EQ to understand and respond to his team’s emotional needs,
Shahid has skilfully diffused the tension and bolstered togetherness and
motivation.
